Binary oppositions

Binary opposition I simple words is something which contradicts another thing and are opposite in meaning. Some example could be left and right, up and down, hero and villain and so on.
These oppositions tend to make the audience understand the story or a text. For example, the audience will cheer for the hero and on the other hand they'll boo for the villain.

In this picture we see the stereotypically popular guy in high school who's got the looks, attitude and confidence. A binary opposition for this character would be the unpopular nerd guy who no one takes notice off. Dressed in vibrant colours which makes him/her look out of place and like an outcast compared to the other characters.

With this picture again we see a pretty, good looking girl who's popular in high school. She's got the flawless hair and face and possibly figure as well and the binary opposition for this would be an 'ugly' girl who isn't usually attractive but in fact people tend to make fun of her as she's seen as an outcast.
