Filming - Issues

We didn't really face a significant amount of problems when in the filming process, however there were a few:

  • In the second half of our shooting, there were other students filming other material during ours. We accidentally captured them in two of our shots.
Action taken:

We re-shot both scenes on the same day, and all went well.

  • Time was an issue, and to be quiet honest we left it quiet late to film the amount we had to do on monday.
We had to shoot the scenes in quick succession, in order to stick to the brief. I wouldn't say we rushed our filming - but instead were alert and assertive when shooting, and took it very seriously, so that we we weren't behind when editing.

  • This wasn't so much an issue, but more of a learning curve. We had to make sure that we filmed so that one clip ran into the next smoothly without it looking like the background to the scene changed.
We had to find the same student that starred in our filming to be in the re-shoot, and we did so.

In the main, things went very well in terms of filming/shooting our teen film opening. We had a good group chemistry, with everyone making sensible suggestions every now and again, and participating in the input of ideas. We didn't have any problems with the camera too.

Filming - Equipment We Used & Risk Assessment

For our filming process, we used very expensive and professional equipment to carry out the shooting of our teen film opening scenes.

The video camera we used was a JVC-HM100E
Here is what it looks like:

We used a tripod too:

Jaya was taking good care of these items, she made sure they were:

- Never out of sight when she was out with them.
(To ensure that they were not at risk of being stolen)
- Always in their cases/protectors when carrying them about.
(To ensure they were not at risk of getting damaged)
- Stored in a safe place in her house
  (Same as first point)

Through bearing this risk assessment in mind, the equipment was all returned in the condition they were handed to us in.

Filming - Schedule (Final Day Of Filming)

First Day of filming

During the half term, we completed our first part of our filming process. As we needed a scene in a bedroom, we decided to film at Jaya's house as it was the most convenient thing to do at the time.

Mise en scene was a major part in portraying the role as a psycho in this part of the filming. As the character is filmed by herself, we decided to include a lot of objects such as pills, sharp objects and matches to emphasis her illness when she is by herself. This character was played by me so as part of the costumes, I wore a onsie which would be suitable as I was supposed to be home alone. In the room, we also put up pictures of the guy the charater is interested in and stuck them to the wall. Using a match, we used that to show the pictures during the filming to make it more serious and intimate. Even though this is a fire hazard during filming, we made sure we all didn't get distracted and paid attention while filming. This is so no harm was caused.

Another way we made this effective was adujsting the lighting in the room. We wanted the scene to look more scary and mysterious so we limited the light to a lamp and a few candles, as well as the light from the matches. We had a few issues with the focusing of the camera and the dim lights didn't help. To resolve this issue, we continued to refilm certain shots but then worked out that some of the blurrings were effective in specific shots. We all had to work co-operatively and remain on task in order for all of this to be successful.

Filming outside of college.

On the 20th February myself and Rachel went over to Jaya's house to begin filming a section of our opening.
The props we used for a scene were we show the main character Crystal's obsession with the guy were a variety as we used what we could in Jaya's house.
This included:
  • Pins
  • Magazines to cut out
  • Scissors
  • Butter knifes
  • Candles

In order for the filming to take place we had to use the scissors to cut out sections from the magazine to create a collage of photos and stick them on Jaya's wall. We went on Twitter to search for photos of Harrison to use in the photo collage as well, after all of the things were cut we used a red pen to draw circles and hearts around harrison's face to show that the girl is obsessed with him.
With the candles we formed a path where we followed it with the camera in dark lighting, the pills, butter knifes and pins where scattered around the bed and emphasised with the camera.

Thankfully, as Jaya had all of these props available it was a positive outcome as we were able to get the scene we wanted without any hassle, Rachel brought her outfit and it worked in sync with the scene as well, her speech, effort and contribution helped a lot.
With the lighting we adjusted Jaya's lighting in her room from really bright to really dim or no light at all in some scenes, the stairs that went up to Jaya's room was a bonus as they creaked while going up on them which made the scene even more effective as we saved ourself the hassle of having to look for this sound effect.

Filming the second half in college.

As a group we continued filming the second half of our opening at college. We did scenes were our main character has her visions where she hurts people and also the scenes where the couple are together and she has visions of what she would do to the girl. For these scenes we were recording and filming in the canteen of college. As we had sofas and tables around us we used it to our advantage by making the characters sit and whatnot, we also had one of our friends included in our footage as an extra character who's talking to the couple and socialising with them.

After we finished all of our filming we went back to the editing room where we watched our clips and saw where we went right and where we also went wrong. In one of our clips that went well there was an error where we had a student walking with a camera and tripod which looks unprofessional. We decided that we needed to record that scene again to improve on it and make our opening better.

Mental health behavioral research

In many cases of moderate depression or anxiety (the most common mental health problems) the person may not even show symptoms or may want to hide them because they worry about what people will think or say about them. The signs can often be more noticeable to other people first e.g if your mood starts changing, it may take some time for you to become aware of it; other people may be much more aware of the difference.
Some common early signs of a mental health problem are:

  • Losing interest in activities and tasks that were previously enjoyed.
  • Poor performance at work.
  • Mood swings that are very extreme or fast and out of character for you.
  • Changes in eating habits and/or appetite: over-eating, bingeing, not eating.
  • Loss of, or increase in, sexual desire.
  • Sleep problems.
  • Increased anxiety, looking or feeling ‘jumpy’ or agitated, sometimes including panic attacks.
  • Feeling tired and lacking energy.
  • Isolating yourself, socialising less; spending too much time in bed.
  • Wanting to go out a lot more, needing very little sleep, feeling highly energetic, creative and sociable, making new friends rapidly, trusting strangers.
  • Hearing and seeing things that others don't.
  • Other differences in perception; for example, mistakenly believing that someone is trying to harm you, is laughing at you, or trying to take over your body.
These are all symptoms that our main actress can show to portray the changes that the main character is going through to make the character and the situation of the opening more realistic and captivating.

First day of filming

We knew what we were doing as planned it well in advance. What we needed to film during the holidays was the part of the opening that could not be done in college, the scene in the main girls bedroom.
At first we planned to film in Rachel's bedroom as she is the main girl so it would make sense to film in her room but unfortunately she had unexpected guests at her house that day so we had to quickly change the plans to see who's house was available to film in. Mine was so I told both my filming partners how to get there and once they were we began to get to work.
As the main character is obsessed with the boy from college we had to gather some pictures of him from social networking sites to then print them off, cut them out and stick the on the wall. We then got the magazine and newspapers that we had collected and started ripping out pictures of anything that you would assume would be easy to get obsessed over e.g beauty. Once everything was up on the wall we vandalized some one the pictures to make it look like she was going "crazy".
To add to the mise en scene of her bedroom we each brought props associated with danger and sprawled them across the bed e.g scissors, pills, pins, matches and knifes. Rachel was in a onsie to show she was at home and comfortable. We also decided to lay a trail of candles to lead up to the bed as the create an aerie atmosphere.
All we had to do by then was the actual filming.

Original and remake of the breakfast club

When filming the remake of 'The breakfast club' we tried to make it as similar to the original as we could. We did not follow the script exactly but spoke from memory. What was said was not miles offf so I think this was ok to do. Not everything was exactly the same as there were curtain things we did not have such as multiple cars so could not film the scenes in the car. Also we only had three people working on this opening so we often had to multi-role which made it all look a bit more unrealistic than I would have liked. I was not in the lesson when the class watched the opening so was at a bit of a disadvantage but my group showed me the opening before we left to film so I had a slight idea of what we had to do. At some points it was really hard to film as we did not have the resources but as it was set in and around school most of it was quite easy.

Binary Oppositions

Binary Oppoisitions are when stars in the movie have opposite characteristics.

For example, in the movie Mean Girls, you had Regina George. She was the glamour girl of the school. She was also bitchy towrads people in the school. Regina also came across as very naive. This is because she wanted to lose weight and believed Cadi had 'weight loss bars' to help her. However, she didn't know that Cadi was being spitful and knew they were full of carbs resulting her to put on weight. They contained chocolate, which shows that she believes anything she's told. Anyone in their right minds know that anything containing chocolate would most probably contain something to make you put on weight.

On the other hand, you had Janis Ian who was a goth in the movie. These two characters completely contrast each other. Janis completely hated Regina and tried to Cati to detroy Reginas reputation. In the movie, she seems very determined and head on about it. This also contrasts Regina's mindset

comparison of 'submarine' remake and original

 The remake and original

The difference in the two that were made is that in the original there is a voice over and the music after is happier than I expected when watching it in silence. the setting that was showed in the clip looked very grey and dull so i thought that the music would be the same as that.

When looking for what music we wanted to add as a group we all thought of what tpe of music we thought would suit the mood.
We decided on a deep trap/trance type of song which we thought added to the character and setting. we chose a remix of Ellie Gouldings cover of alt-j's tesselate. I liked this choice better than the original as Ithought it would appeal to people of all ages rather than older people which would only be known by the older generation.

'submarine' remake

This is our remake of submarine, we changed the sound of the backgound.

timetoast

To show my understanding of film titles in media, I've created a timeline of a movie I looked at called Roommate. This was only for the beginning of the movie so I could see the titles in order. I have also looked at other film openings such as Juno to compare the order of the titles. I realised that films have a certain order of putting in titles depending on various things. For example, if the director is very well known, his name would appear at both the beginning and end of the title showings.

I have created this timeline on a separate website called 'Timetoast'. To get it onto the blog, I had to copy the link to embed it onto blogger.
